Why I'm Launching a Tech Startup for My 50th Birthday
I turn 50 on February 13th.
Normally, this is the milestone where people start thinking about slowing down. But for the last year, I’ve been thinking about something else: Time.
Specifically, where my time was going.
Like many high-achievers, I pride myself on getting things done. I’m a top-producing real estate agent. I run a business. I have a family. But in the quiet moments—the evenings on the couch, the breaks between meetings—I found myself losing hours to my phone.
I wasn’t working. I wasn’t resting. I was numbing out.
I would pick up my phone to check one email, and suddenly 45 minutes would vanish into a black hole of news feeds and social media. I wasn’t lazy; I was just fighting a billion-dollar algorithm designed to keep me scrolling. And I was losing.
So, I decided to build the solution myself.
On February 13th, I am launching Paced, a new kind of digital wellness app.
Most screen-time apps are "Digital Jailers." They lock your phone and shame you for having no willpower. They feel like punishment.
Paced is different. It’s a "Compassionate Pattern Interrupt."
It doesn’t just say "No." It says, "If you want more time, you have to move."
How it Works: The Mechanic
When your scrolling time is up, your apps lock.
You have two choices:
Wait for the timer to finish.
Walk to unlock them faster.
Unlike other blockers that demand a password or money to bypass the lock, Paced lets you trade steps for time.
(100 Steps = 3 Minutes back).
It turns a passive, numbing habit into an active, conscious one. It breaks the trance.
Why Launch Now?
Because February is hard. The New Year’s resolutions have faded. The winter is long. And for many families, the February Break is coming up—a time when we pay thousands of dollars for a vacation, only to spend it staring at a screen.
I built Paced to be "Vacation Insurance." I built it so we can be present.
